Why The Treadmill?
The standard electric treadmill seems to be the most preferred exercise equipment for those who choose to work out in the comfort and safety of their homes. Many who choose the motorized treadmill can avoid negotiating for running space with cars and motorists, running in place at stop lights or de-germing the machines that appear at most public fitness clubs and public gyms.
The safety issue – not having to arm yourself against potential muggers – if you jog outside is also a plus. Many cities offer running or walking tracks through a local public school or city park. While it is ideal to be able to take in the fresh air, it requires certain safety precautions that would not be required in your own home.
Having access to a treadmill in your home means that you can choose to exercise at your leisure and several times a day. It is a great stress reliever, has the ability to change or stabilize moods and helps promote better sleeping habits, especially for insomniacs. For the 20 million people who have depression or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), the treadmill is a wonderful no-meds intervention.
Of course, you will need to consider several practical issues before purchasing your treadmill. Decide how much space you have to place the equipment, whether you will mostly run or walk, whether you will be the only user and how often you realistically will use your machine.
If you plan to run, you will need a longer walking track. Most belts on treadmills are about 48 inches long. If there are other people you must share the treadmill with, make sure to get adjustable features so that everyone can enjoy his workout. If you plan to use the treadmill every single day or several times a day, you will have to make sure that you check the warranty for repairs, replacements and damages. Cheap treadmills are not necessarily the best choice. If you can afford to you should choose a reputible brand. This will drive up the price, but it will save you from investing in equipment that cannot handle the traffic.
Also, if you have a real issue with space in your house, you should make sure to price the models that fold away.
As a precaution, you should make sure that you place protective covering on your floor before placing the treadmill and place the treadmill on a level surface. Also, only plug in your equipment in outlets that have been properly grounded to prevent the risk of electric shock.
Clothing that you wear on an electric treadmill should also not be so loose that it can get caught in any part of the machine mechanism. For this reason, it is also extremely important to keep pets and small children away from a treadmill. Only one person should be on the machine at a time, and there are weight restrictions for each kind of treadmill (usually no more than 250 pounds allowed).
